"Ceramic Sculpture - Religious Bust Pot - Sister Marthe (anne Biget) - Glazed Terracotta"
Mid-19th Century Local Production - Saint-Étienne ? This superb ceramic bust pot represents Sister Marthe, born Anne Biget, a heroic nun whose commitment to serving others marked history, particularly during the most tumultuous periods of the French Revolution and the Empire. This glazed terracotta bust is an exceptional work, both for the quality of its production and for the profound history it commemorates. Sister Marthe's face is finely sculpted, reflecting both the determination and serenity of this remarkable woman. Her nun's habit is decorated with several medals, recalling the many honorary distinctions received during her life. The large cross hanging from her neck symbolizes her spiritual commitment and her unwavering dedication to others. The glossy honey glaze of the ceramic highlights the subtle details of the sculpture, giving a unique depth and texture to this commemorative piece. This type of bust, produced to honor important local figures, is a lasting tribute to Sister Marthe and her impact on the community. History of Sister Marthe (Anne Biget) Born in 1749 in Thoraise, Anne Biget decided at the age of 20 to devote her life to God and others by entering the Visitation Convent in Besançon, where she took the name Sister Marthe. Initially a lay sister and turn sister, she quickly became a central figure in her religious community. In 1790, during the French Revolution, monastic orders were suppressed. Rather than withdraw, Sister Marthe devoted herself to helping those in need. She gained the esteem of the revolutionary authorities, who entrusted her with the distribution of food to the sick and prisoners. She also worked alongside Jeanne-Antide Thouret, who founded a free school for girls and a soup service for the poor in Besançon. During the wars of the Revolution and the Empire, Sister Marthe became a key figure in assisting the wounded and prisoners of all nationalities brought to the Saint-Jacques Hospital in Besançon. Her courage and dedication were such that, during the siege of Besançon, the Austrian troops allowed her to cross their lines to deliver medicines and food to the sick and wounded. She also saved many deserting soldiers from the firing squad. After the Restoration, Louis XVIII decorated her at court for her acts of bravery. In addition, during their visit to Paris, the Tsar of Russia, the King of Prussia and the Emperor of Austria paid tribute to her by awarding her the highest civil distinctions of their respective countries. They also provided financial support for her charitable works. True to her motto, "all the unfortunate are my friends", Sister Marthe continued her work of assistance until her death on March 29, 1824, in Besançon. Please note: The bust pot is in excellent general condition with some minor signs of wear on the base, without altering the integrity of the piece.
