This painting is an in-depth study of one kept in a private collection (see René Armellino, L'univers singulier de Charles Sellier un peintre nancéien du XIXe, cat. exh., Musée Départemental Georges de La Tour, Vic-sur-Seille, 2007, p.96, fig.68).
A friend of Jean-Jacques Henner and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Charles Sellier is considered a precursor of the symbolist movement that would develop at the end of his century. Originally from Nancy, he won the Prix de Rome in 1857 on the subject of The Resurrection of Lazarus.
He exhibited at the Salon from 1857 to 1882.
Particularly sought after, Charles Sellier's works are rare on the market.
