Alfred Grévin, a railway worker by trade, drawing was a hobby for him. He began his career as a caricaturist in Paris in 1853 by contributing to satirical publications in newspapers such as "Le Gaulois", "Le journal drôle" and "Le Charivari". His distinctive style captured the essence of Parisian life at the time. In particular that of young women, so much so that the expression "C'est un Grévin" became synonymous with a pretty, elegant young woman. His works are often perceived as having a touch of mischief and a keen sense of social observation.
In addition to his work as a caricaturist, he also designed many costumes for the fairy theater, dressing many celebrities, actresses, dancers, ... of his time such as Judic or Théo. His work brought a humorous and burlesque dimension to the shows.
He is known throughout the world for having co-founded the Grévin museum with Arthur Meyer in 1882 in Paris. Eponymous museum, which has become a famous cultural institution, which hosts wax models of celebrities that have delighted young and old alike since then.
