Beautiful and important large painting depicting Madonna and Child, copy by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, (c. 1655 to 1660).
The painting is datable to 1700.
The canvas from which it takes its cue has been on display in the Pitti Palace, with attribution to Murillo, since 1828. Though its provenance is unknown, the hypothesis of its purchase by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinand III has been advanced.
Stylistically, the painting can be likened to the series of Madonnas painted by Murillo between 1650/55, executed in the early phase of his porduction. This composition is to be considered later than the Prado's 'Madonna,' because of its more standoffish and less monumental character, and its choice of color ranges, ahead of the Rococo season.
