"Napoleon III Period Fireplace Surround, 19th Century."
Set of a clock and two amphorae in bronze and black and red marble. Bronzes adorn each element. What makes this set unique and original is the mixture of an Egyptian-style decoration for the ornamentation of the marble, and the bronzes representing typical Persian subjects. The amphorae recall Greco-Roman antiquity. The amphorae have bronze cups at the neck and have a base also decorated with bronzes. The shape of the clock recalls the shape of the Ziggurat of Assyria. The clock is flanked by standing figures of an Assyrian man and woman respectively. The latter is surmounted by an Assyrian winged guardian called a Lamassus, like those of the Khorsabad Palace that can be seen in the Louvre Museum. Slight wear on the back of the marbles of the amphorae. Period 1852 to 1870. Good general condition. Dimensions: 57 x 16.5 cm H: 65 cm Each amphora: 17 x 17 cm H: 41 cm
