Small Neo-renaissance Milanese Mirror, Grand Tour

Small Neo-Renaissance mirror in ebonized wood and bone inlaid with classical engravings, 19th century, circa 1800-1850, Milan, Italy.

This 17th century Italian style mirror is probably made in Milan. The wood (possibly fruitwood) is stained and veneered to give the frame an ebony appearance. The "frieze" (central part of the frame) is decorated with bone inlays with floral scrolls. The edges have beautiful stepped moldings. Two bone plaques can be seen at the top and bottom engraved with roses, while the plaques to the left and right show very detailed Roman gladiators. The gladiators are typically neoclassical.
These types of objects typically fall under the so-called 'Grand Tour' category. Grand Tour antiques refer to works of art, furniture and objects collected by travellers on the Grand Tour. The Grand Tour was a long journey made by wealthy European youth, especially from the nobility and upper middle class, in the 17th to 19th centuries. This journey, often through Italy, France, Greece and other parts of Europe, served as a cultural education, studying classical art, architecture and culture. Mainly objects from Italy from the early to mid/late 19th century are Grand Tour. At that time, these objects were taken home as souvenirs.
