When it is intended to enrich the glass with gold leaf, glassmakers can follow two paths. The gold can be made an integral part of the mixture by placing a sheet of gold on the part of the mixture collected from the crucible. It can then be covered with a further vitreous layer. At this point, the glassmaker carries out the blowing operation through which the gold is dispersed in the mixture, giving rise to a golden dust effect. With this system, a brilliant powder is created inside the glass itself, which discreetly embellishes the object that is being created. If, on the other hand, part of the glass is to be covered in gold or a gold design is to be applied, the technique to follow is that of lamination. In this case, the gold leaf is applied to the cold glass by interposing fluxes and shaping the gold leaf using special tools that can be made of bone. For perfect fixing, the object is annealed.
SOMMERSO (Submerged) glass: type of glass obtained by immersing the glass being processed in crucibles with different colors. The object is thus made up of several transparent layers of different colors, even of great thickness. In use since the 20th century.
