"Sodegarami "arrest Weapon" - Edo Period (1603-1868)."
JAPAN - Edo period (1603-1868) Sodegarami. Wooden shaft, the upper third bristling with thirty-six points topped with six hooks and a pike. At the other end a black lacquered metal cap "Hirumaki" to protect the shaft from damage by contact with the ground. This weapon is part of the armament used by the samurai in charge of police operations, assisted by ordinary citizens, during the Edo period. Mainly intended for maintaining order, it is used to apprehend delinquents without injuring them. The sodegarami is used to tangle the sleeves and clothing of the suspect during an arrest.
