Buddha Shakyamuni depicted in bhumisparsa mudra on his throne, richly decorated with friezes and golden floral motifs on a brown/burgundy lacquer background. He is entirely focused on the contact of his hand with the earth, calling the earth goddess Bhumi to bear witness to his victory over Mara (“Maravijana”), remarkable head with curls treated in points. The ushnisha enhanced with a lotus bud, symbol of his great spirituality. Burma, 18th century. Provenance: Estate of the merchant and collector Claude de Marteau.
