Born in Nantes on May 13, 1874 and in Crozon on September 11, 1955, from a family in the Angers region, Gabriel studied at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts where he was a student of Luc Olivier Merson and Albert Besnard.
Official painter of the Navy, he received a medal from the Central Union of Decorative Arts as well as from the Society for the Encouragement of Art and Industry, and exhibited at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts as well as in many galleries in the West and South of France. Gabriel Chanteau also drew many illustrations for bibliophile works.
Our work is probably preparatory to an illustration on the French colonies.
