Paris, circa 1800 - 1810
Decorative pair of chairs called ‘au bouclier d'amazone’ or ‘à la pelta’. Fine Parisian production in mahogany and mahogany veneer for the belts. They stand on four Etruscan-style legs. The chamfered uprights of the backs are a sign of quality, bringing these chairs closer to the work of Pierre-Benoît Marcion, who produced similar models with sword-shaped front legs, and Jacob-Desmalter, a similar example of which is kept at the Mobilier National (see last photo).
This is a stylistically interesting model, which shows the diversity that can be found in antique borrowings around 1800...
Condition report: seat completely restored. Assemblies revised, varnish cleaned. Horsehair seats on straps (antique), horsehair fabric, which few manufacturers still produce today. Matching trimmings.
