"Alexandre Joseph Josquin - Large Portrait Of A Man Circa 1845"
Large oval portrait, oil on canvas, of a learned man in its original gilded wooden frame with a frieze of foliage and flowers from the Louis-Philippe period, circa 1845. The painter, Alexandre Joseph Josquin, a Parisian painter originally from Wallonia, was a student of Alexandre-Denis Abel De Pujol. At the beginning of his career, he produced many careful portraits and exhibited at the Salon from 1842 to 1870. This portrait represents a learned man, in a suit and wearing glasses, leaning on a desk on which we can see books, a sheet of paper and a quill. The whole is in very satisfactory condition but it should be noted, a trace of humidity on the back of the canvas, a previously restored perforation and two areas of repainting (upper left outline of the hair and part of the desk top). Its gilded wooden frame is original and is in good condition even if we can see cracks camouflaged by repainting. Dimensions: view 72 x 90cm, frame 14cm wide. Restorations possible by specialists (gilder and painting restorer) on estimate.
