The work is representative of Zingg's work, his concern for simplicity and readability.
It is signed and dated (1938) at the bottom right, discreetly. It is placed under glass, under a sober white mat bordered by a gold border that echoes the framing strip. The whole is in excellent condition.
The artist
Jules-Emile ZINGG was born in Montbéliard in 1882. He began his training at the Besançon School of Fine Arts, then joined the Beaux-Arts in Paris where he specialized in landscape painting. He was awarded the title of second prizewinner of the Prix de Rome in 1911.
Jules-Émile Zingg exhibited at the Galerie Druet in Paris in 1918. He met Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier in Perros-Guirec. The lesson taught by the Nabis was fundamental, confirmed by that of Vuillard, whom he met in 1916 during a mission to the front. His painting, imbued with Japonism, now stripped of all superfluity, became capable of capturing "all that nature can express that is hardest, harshest, most desolate".
From 1918 onwards, he exhibited regularly in the most prestigious Parisian galleries (Druet, Bernheim) and participated in major official salons as well as numerous exhibitions abroad (Tokyo, Pittsburgh, Stockholm, Mexico, etc.). In addition to oil and watercolour, where he excelled, he practiced engraving, frescoes and also composed tapestry cartoons for the Gobelins and Beauvais factories.
In 1921 he became a professor at the Académie Ranson and ten years later at the École de la Fresque de la Ville de Paris. He divided his time between the capital where these important functions kept him and the various provinces where he came to recharge his batteries, his inspiration always remaining essentially rural: Brittany, Auvergne, Picardy, Normandy... without forgetting his native Franche-Comté.
His success with both collectors and critics never waned. He wrote to a collector friend: There are Zinggs everywhere, only they have to be made.
The Legion of Honor for painter was awarded to him in 1930. Seriously ill, he nevertheless worked until his death, which occurred in Paris on May 4, 1942.
In 2020, his great-grandson parted with a collection comprising 110 paintings and 230 drawings which was sold at the Hôtel Drouot.
