The dotted engraving shows Louis XVI standing, turned to his right, his hand in his waistcoat.
It is in a bronze frame decorated with palmettes and blackened wood.
The frame has two labels on the back.
One is inscribed "Louis XVI // Dedicated to all friends of good kings"
The second is the label of the seller, Alphonse Giroux "Au coq Honoré, rue du Coq St Honoré, N° 7 // Chez Alph. Giroux a Paris // (illegible)". Alphonse Giroux was established at this address between 1799 and 1848, which allows us to date this frame from this period.
The Alphonse Giroux brand supplied the bourgeoisie and nobility of his time by specializing in the very high end. This small framed engraving must have been one of the most modest objects in the gallery...
The Carnavalet Museum has a copy of this engraving that seems unusual, with no identified author.
Charming royalist souvenir from the Restoration period, in homage to the last moments of the Ancien Régime, sold by one of the greatest dealers of the 19th century.
5.4 x 4.4 cm on sight for the engraving alone
11 x 9.5 cm for the frame
The engraving is in good condition, slight warp on the right side. Fly holes on the frame.
