Details and Meaning:
This painted cross (Croce dipinta) illustrates a Triumphant Christ, surmounting the instruments of his Passion. Christ's face is framed by the symbols of the Sun and the Moon, while a Mater Dolorosa is at his feet, above a skull, symbolizing Christ's triumph over death.
The representation of the "Christus Triumphans" is typical of the Byzantine period, where Christ is depicted alive, detached from all suffering, in full glory. His eyes wide open, his gaze turned towards the spectator, he stands before the cross, thus signifying his victory over death and sin.
