"Very Large Christ Of The Deposition, Germany, 17th Century."
Very large (1.42m), and rare Christ, probably of Deposition, carved in lime wood. Formerly painted, traces of preparation especially on the very beautiful perizonium; a finger of the right hand restored. Uncommon representation of Christ who, rather than being on the Cross, is shown lying down, awaiting the washing of the body, before his burial. A hollow on the back and an old iron attachment suggest that it could have been hung on the wall, but the first explanation seems more plausible. Southern Germany, perhaps Bamberg, 17th century. Very beautiful presence of great realism.
