Beautiful cylindrical pewter MUG with relief decoration of four episodes from the life of the "Prodigal Son", a parable of Jesus according to Luc, his farewells, his escapades, the shepherd, and his return, accompanied by human masks, figures in terms and busts. The lid is topped with a spinning top and fitted with a molded S-shaped thumb rest, the base rests on three skates representing cherubs.
Height: 20.9 cm.
GERMANY (SAXONY?), 19th century

Spinning top of the lid re-welded and one skate consolidated.
Two examples are reproduced in: "Sächsisches Zinn des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts" by Günter Reinheckel, pages 143 and 192. This tmug comes from a mold from the end of the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century, it is identical in all respects to one of the models cited above.
The absence of a master founder's mark does not allow us to consider it with certainty as dating from the 1600s;
These objects with relief decoration called "Edelzinn" were not chiseled as we often hear but came "raw from the foundry" which supposed having a mold of high quality of definition and a great mastery of the casting technique.
The definition of the relief decoration of the mug presented here is of equal quality to that of its period ancestors.
