"Pair Of Silver Plated Bronze Tric-trac Candlesticks. Hallmarked With A Crowned C "
Rare pair of mid-18th century Tric-trac candlesticks, in silver-plated bronze. They each bear the crowned C stamp on their tip, which is the mark of a tax levied in Paris between 1745 and 1749. The war of the Austrian succession was costly, and this new tax was created on all bronze works, old or new, passing through the workshop of a Parisian bronzier. Once peace was signed, the tax disappeared. Tric-trac candlesticks were accessories for a game table where they were inserted into notches made for this purpose on each side and allowed for long night-time games. They have frequently disappeared. The silver plating is worn, probably original. Here it is interesting to find furnishing elements, true documents of a way of life, moreover perfectly dated.
