"Statue Of The Virgin And Child, Large Polychrome Wooden Sculpture, 19th Century"
Very beautiful and large polychrome wooden statue from the 19th century, carved in the round, representing the Virgin Mary carrying the baby Jesus on her right arm, the latter holding in his hands the orb symbolizing the domination of Christ over the world. The Virgin rests her left foot on a crescent moon according to a representation from the Apocalypse according to Saint John. The symbolism of the statues of the Virgin treading on a crescent moon, or a serpent, is that of the purification of original sin. The features of the characters are fine and marked by great softness. The drapery of the clothes, very worked, brings a lot of relief to the sculpture. Note some wear at the level of the polychromy which does not spoil in any way the pretty patina of time, as well as some cracks in the wood, but nothing serious either or abnormal given its age (see photos).
