"Superb Roman Scale Element, Heads Of Fantastic Creatures - High Period"
Second half of the 17th century - Dated: 1677 Provenance: France This Roman metal balance element, dated 1677, is an exceptional example of a weighing instrument used for trade and agriculture in the 17th century. Roman balances, or beam balances, were commonly used to accurately measure goods using an adjustable counterweight on a graduated arm. Decorations: The focal point of this object lies in its sophisticated decorations at the top, representing two stylized creatures. These creature heads, with hybrid forms between the animal and the fantastic, evoke marine or mythological figures, with sculpted details reminiscent of griffins, stylized dolphins, or even fantastic beings inspired by medieval and Renaissance imagination. These figures, with their fluid lines and frontal posture, suggest not only an aesthetic dimension but also a symbolic function. Fantasy creatures were often used to represent strength, protection or balance in medieval and post-Renaissance art. The heads are finely engraved, with details that show a craftsmanship specific to this period, when even utilitarian objects had to have a decorative value. This motif is also a reminder of the artistic influences of the Renaissance period, which liked to integrate mythological and exotic elements into everyday objects. Note: Well-preserved ornaments, despite some slight signs of wear and a lack of the original stem. Dimensions: Height: 21 cm ALL DELIVERIES ARE MADE BY DHL EXPRESS ONLY!
