Founder Ferdinand Barbedienne
Signed "F. Barbedienne"
19th century
Bronze bas-relief with a nuanced brown patina, made by the Ferdinand Barbedienne foundry in the 19th century.
This bas-relief is inspired by a fragment of the frieze of the Parthenon, entitled the "Ergastines". The scene represents young Athenian girls, the Ergastines, participating in the procession of the Great Panathenaea, during which they offered an embroidered tunic to the statue of Athena. They are shown here welcomed by two figures framing the ritual.
The original frieze, commissioned by Pericles and executed under the direction of Phidias, measured 160 meters and represented this procession which was held every four years.
