"Ikupasuy - Ainu Ritual Scepter In Carved Wood - Curiosity - Japan - Meiji Period"
Early 20th century Japan Meiji period (1868-1912) This wooden ritual scepter, engraved with Japanese inscriptions, reflects Japan’s growing cultural influence on the Ainu during the Meiji period. Traditionally, ikupasuy are decorated with Ainu motifs, but this rare example features Japanese characters, marking a period of cultural transition when the Ainu were gradually integrated into Japanese society. While the engraved characters reflect this influence, the object retains its sacred function, used to offer prayers to the protective Kamuy spirits during sake offering rituals. Despite extensive research, I have discovered no other examples of Ainu ritual scepters engraved with Japanese characters. This exceptional scepter reflects the transformation of Ainu spiritual practices under Japanese influence, highlighting its historical significance and rarity. This piece embodies the encounter between two cultures, both in its symbolism and its ritual use. Despite Japanese influence, the Ainu have preserved many ancestral spiritual practices. This scepter, used to pour sake offerings and invoke the Kamuy, symbolizes the connection between the world of men and that of spirits. The engraved Japanese inscriptions could reflect prayers or incantations linked to rituals, while integrating cultural elements specific to the Meiji period, when exchanges between the two cultures were frequent. Iconography consulted: Ainu. Spirit of a Northern People, William W. Fitzhugh and Chisato O. Dubreuil Please note: Natural wear of the wood and slight marks of ritual use, giving the object a superb patina! Dimensions: Length: 36.5 cm ALL DELIVERIES ARE MADE BY DHL EXPRESS ONLY!
