History: Gerrit or Gerard Hermansz van Honthorst, also nicknamed, in French and Italian, Gérard de la nuit (Gherardo della Notte) or Gérard des nuits (Gherardo delle notte), born on November 4, 1590 in Utrecht where he died on April 27, 1656, is a Dutch genre and history painter and portraitist of the Golden Age. In the 1620s, he was, along with Hendrick ter Brugghen and Dirck van Baburen, one of the leading representatives of the Caravaggist school of Utrecht. His style later evolved towards classicism. Renowned during his lifetime, he received commissions from Frederick V and Elizabeth, King and Queen of Bohemia in exile in the Netherlands, Charles I of England and Christian IV of Denmark, before becoming court painter to William II of Orange-Nassau. Today, he is mainly known for his works from the Caravaggist period.
