These pieces of furniture, with a deliciously kitsch design, are generally considered to be artisanal creations from the Black Forest. This mountainous region of western Germany, located opposite the Vosges, is one of the natural habitats of the bear. It was not necessary to attribute to this region the paternity of a production that gives pride of place to this animal. However, these pieces of furniture and objects in carved wood come from the Brienz region, in Switzerland. The Swiss poet, Heinrich Federer, also ranks them among local curiosities, in the same way as the Giessbach waterfalls and the tasty grilled eels, another regional specialty.
