A depiction of excellent quality and condition following the Royalist defeat at the Battle of Worcester showing The Surprise (HMY Royal Escape) departing Brighton with Charles I on board in the guise of a merchant bound for France. Presented in a good gilt frame. The work is technically identical to Van De Velde’s marine paintings of the period and a similar work of 1675 depicting Charles II leaving Portsmouth on the Katherine was sold by Christies, Amsterdam for £130,000.
