Portrait of two young girls, 1882
oil on canvas, cm. 135x100
signed and dated lower left: "EMILE LEVY / 1882"
A skilled academic artist, student of Picot and Abel de Pujol, he painted mainly works of historical, allegorical and religious subjects but also managed to establish himself as a refined and sophisticated portraitist.
Numerous of his works are present in the most important private and public collections throughout France such as the Louvre (where the four allegories L'Air, L'Eau, La Terre, Le Feu are preserved), the Musée d'Orsay (Abraham lavant les pieds de trois anges, Portrait de jeune homme, Portrait de José Maria de Heredia, Portrait du contre-amiral Miot), Palais du Luxembourg in Paris; the Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen; Tessé Museum in Le Mans; National Museum of the Castle, Versailles).
The painting, coming from a private Venetian collection, appears here for the first time on the market. The canvas is in good general condition with signs of an old restoration probably carried out in the 1950s.
