Object description :

"Interesting Seventeenth Century Marina. Attr. In Monsù Montagna (ca. 1608-1660)"
Interesting painting depicting a scene of a sailing ship sinking at sea during a storm near a fortification perched on some rocks. The painter who painted it was an artist active in the mid-seventeenth century, fascinated by the maritime scenes spread by those dissident landscape painters, such as Salvador Rosa, Filippo Napolitano and many others of Flemish-Dutch origin.

It is possible to connect the work in question, with the restless seascapes that often represent shipwrecks by the Flemish painter Matthieu Van Plattenberg called Monsù Montagna (Antwerp 1608-1660), to a quick comparison of his pictorial catalogue, we can see that there are many references which coincide, like the typology of boats, with red flags, the topographic quality of the settlements, the atmospheres and the proto-romantic verve with which these scenarios are corroborated.

The painting is in excellent condition and includes a contemporary gilded frame finely engraved with floral spirals of Central Italian manufacture.

On the back there is a Verner stamp, with a date. It would seem that these writings are posthumous to the period of execution of our painting.

The measurements are: 95 x 73 cm canvas only; 117 x 95cm including the frame.

We attach a certificate of authenticity to the sale.
