Rene Maxime Choquet (1872-1958)
Rene-Maxime Choquet was born in Douai on 21 July 1872 , he was a French animal painter and sculptor .
A pupil of Jules Lefebvre , Tony Robert-Fleury , and Hermann-Léon , at the Beaux-Arts of Paris , then at the Julian Academy , he exhibited annually at the Salon of French Artists .
In 1929 , he presented the paintings "The Mullet Market" (Spain) , and "Corner Market in Spain" .
He received a silver medal in 1914 .
In 1919 , he also won the "Rosa-Bonheur Prize" , which rewarded animal paintings .
After marrying Albertine Buche for the first time in 1906 in Paris, he married Alice Arnould for the second time on 8 July 1925 in Bordeaux and discovered the Basque country .
In 1912 , he moved into a large villa called "Oberena", on the road from Ciboure to Olette , and became one of the region's leading painters .
He was a member of the "Group of Nine" whose centre was "Ciboure" .
Rene-Maxime Choquet died on 6 February 1958 in Saint-Jean-de-Luz .
A street was named after him in Ciboure (Basque Country) , under the impetus of Jean Paul Goikoetxea (Art History researcher) , and his thesis on the birth of Basque regionalist painting in Ciboure .
