"The Angel Appearing To Manoah And His Wife, Amsterdam 17th Century"
The angel appearing to Manoah and his wife, magnificent oil on canvas from the first half of the 17th century, by a pre-Rembranesque Amsterdam artist. The biblical episode depicted shows the angel of the Lord announcing to Manoah (or Manoach) and his wife the imminent birth of their son Samson. The scene takes on its "supernatural" dimensions through the treatment of light announcing the chiaroscuro works of Rembrandt and other artists of his generation. Our painting is closely related to the works of the painters Jan Tengnagel (1584 - 1635) and Jan Symonsz Pynas (1583 - 1631). Very good condition. Presented in an imposing quality gilded frame from the 19th century. On the back, inventory numbers of collections or exhibitions. Total dimensions: 81 X 71 cm. Canvas only: 61 X 51 cm
