Condition: Very good original vintage condition. Wear consistent with use and age. The mirror is original: one or two small marks on the back of the glass but no scratches.

Rare and very elegant table or bathroom mirror by the Kristiansson brothers. The mirror frame is solid curved teak, typical of Luxus designs, with beautiful dovetail joints. It rests on a nickel-plated metal pen. on a teak and metal tripod base allowing it to occupy a very limited space. It is tiltable and pivots on its base by an ingenious mechanism at the back. The mirror can be completely disassembled for easy and safe shipping.

The designer brothers Uno & Östen Kristiansson are known for their lighting and mirrors and were particularly active from 1950 to 1970 in Sweden. They were prolific designers with a clear design aesthetic, easily identifiable as “Scandinavian Modern”. Although there is little biographical information about the duo, their work is highly regarded.

Uno Kristiansson was born in 1925 and Östen two years later in 1927. Little is known about their education, but it is assumed that they spent their early years in southern Sweden. They were probably taught the business by their father, who ran his own furniture company (Vittsjö Furniture, launched in 1919, after the Swedish village where it was located).

In the 1950s, Uno Kristiansson founded his own factory, Luxus, also in Vittsjö. There he produced indoor and outdoor lamps, furniture and mirrors, designed by the two brothers. Their collections were launched in Sweden and throughout Europe. It was probably in 1966 that Östen took over his father's business and renamed it Östen Kristiansson AB (it exists today under its original name: Vittsjö Möbelfabrik AB.) It is not known what was produced at this time, or whether or not the company was separate from Luxus.

Like many of their Swedish contemporaries, the Kristianssons favoured teak in many of their designs. Notable works by the brothers include the acrylic Plafo Ceiling Lamp (1950), the opal glass UFO Lamp (1950s), the Model 204 Hunting Chair (1954), and a series of minimalist mirrors from the 1960s, including this one, which reflect the style of Jacques Adnet's Circulaire Mirror (1950). From the 1970s onwards, Luxus focused on creating lighting fixtures for public spaces.

Östen died in 2003, survived by his brother. Today, their work is highly regarded by vintage enthusiasts and design lovers looking for a Scandinavian feel.
