Object description :

"Appearance Before Caiaphas – Frans Francken (1581-1642)"
Caiaphas, the high priest and his supreme council, question Jesus in their palace. The high priest said to him: "In the name of the living God, I demand that you answer us under oath: are you the Christ, the Son of God?" Jesus replied: "You say so. But I tell you: from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the One who is mighty and coming on the clouds of heaven." At that moment the high priest tore his clothes and said: "He has insulted God... He is guilty and deserves death." Here is Jesus now in the courtyard,
he is mocked by the people of the elders, whose expressions on our painting are striking.
A rather rare theme for this quality iconography.
Beautiful oil on copper with an interesting play of chiaroscuro in a gilded wooden frame with several gaps.
A Flemish work around the 1620s
Dimensions of 28 cm by 22. Very good condition.
