Wooden tebako box covered with gold lacquer decoration and the maki-e method of sprinkling metal particles on the still wet lacquer. The decoration depicts hibiscus flowers (which, because they bloom from July to October, are a symbol of resistance and vitality) and aquatic plants.
Length 20.5 cm, width 15.5 cm, height 6.5 cm.
Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912).
