Object description :

"Empire Period, Beautiful Pair Of Psyche And Cupid Candelabra. "
An elegant pair of candelabra from the early 19th century, depicting Psyche and Eros (Cupid) in the first moments of their courtship.

Each figure stands next to a magnificent torchiere forming the base of the four arms of light.
The triangular base with curved sides, chiseled with oil lamps, olive branches, lotuses and dolphins.
The sides with canted sides ending in claw feet. Superb original gilding with perfectly chiseled matt and brightwork, these candelabra can be attributed to Claude Galle.
The gilding, characteristic of the Master, but also by the design and proportions of the figures. As noted by Ottomeyer and Pröschel in Vergoldete Bronzen, vol. I: "Claude Galle's style of modeling the body is characterized by a mannerist elongation of proportions and an effort to express emotion in posture and facial expression."
The expression of feelings is subtly transcribed, we feel the modesty and attraction of the most famous lovers in mythology. Psyche, her gaze fixed on the butterfly she holds in her hands, evoking the purity of the soul and innocence. Love spying on the beauty, hiding the magic arrow in his back, no longer knowing whether he should use it.

Very beautiful state of conservation with its magnificent original mercury gilding. Old small restoration on the base of a light arm.

Empire period, between 1810 and 1820.
