"Portrait Painting By Sonia Lewitska 1874-1937."
Wife of Jean Marchand from 1905 to 1925, this artist of Russian-Polish origin settled in Paris in 1905. She frequented the painters of Montparnasse and the Ecole de Paris where she developed her style. There she met Raoul Dufy who taught her the technique of painting on silk which would later allow her to work for haute couture. There she also met Jean Marchand who would become her husband in the company of whom she would paint. Their relatives served as models, in particular the woman in our portrait (a photo of Jean Marchand's painting in the appendix). This oil on canvas without a frame comes from a small batch from her studio. A few small nail holes on the edge and the canvas certainly cut, hence the absence of a signature.
