An imperious animal force emanates from these two intertwined bodies.
Théodore Géricault was born on September 26, 1791 in Rouen and died on January 26, 1824 in Paris, at the age of 33.
He was a romantic painter, sculptor, watercolorist, lithographer, of history, mythological compositions, genre scenes, portraitist and animal painter.
Around 1815-1816, perhaps to break a tumultuous love affair, Théodore Géricault left for Italy, where he once again studied the old masters, Caravaggio, Raphael and Michelangelo, whose influence is felt in the composition of the bodies.
A black pencil and wash preserved at the Louvre Museum "Nymph and Satyr" is to be related to our work, but while the wash is part of the register of gallantry, our sculpture stages an intense and inescapable embrace.
Our plaster is a workshop proof made in hollow-lost, revealing the "seams". This casting technique was widely used at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
A nervous and powerful work, it is presented in its natural color patinated by time.
It is signed on the back "T. Géricault". In very good condition, only a few small scratches.
