Moreover, Odette was the first woman to receive the Grand Prix de Rome for Painting, in 1925.]. Pastel material Frame In patinated gilded wood Gabriel Augizeau had contributed to local artistic life, by participating in various exhibitions. Thus, in January 1927, he participated in the first Salon Yonnais, which offered to the discerning eye of the public of La Roche-sur-Yon, the paintings of 200 established painters, all from Vendée. Today, his legacy is preserved through his works, which continue to be appreciated for their charm and their ability to evoke emotions linked to their Vendée expression. Gabriel Dieudonné Victor AUGIZEAU was born on December 13, 1894 in the lower Vendée bocage. The small town of Nieul-Le-Dolent, located 15 km from La Roche-sur-Yon and 20 km from the sea, was home to his father's butcher's shop, Victor, who did not disdain to occasionally abandon his chopper and knife for the razor and scissors... of the hairdresser! His mother Clarisse helped in the shop. He was about ten years old when the family settled in Les Sables d'Olonne where Victor and Clarisse, his parents, took over a café, rue Printanière, which also served as a delicatessen. In 1908, he obtained his school leaving certificate. Belonging to the class of 1914, the young Gabriel was mobilized from the first hours of the conflict. He was assigned to the 93rd infantry regiment until October 6, 1915, when he was taken prisoner. He would end the war in Germany. Back in Vendée, he took over his father's delicatessen and settled on the Talmont road. In April 1919, he married a young seamstress from Les Sables, Marguerite MENANTEAU, with whom he had a daughter, Josette. One day, he gave up his delicatessen to paint. He worked in his studio, but he took up his summer quarters in his small "cabin" which opened onto the embankment. In love with his land of Vendée, both its groves and its coastline, Gabriel Augizeau had managed to capture its beauty and authenticity. The Breton coasts sometimes also inspired him. On May 25, 1963, Gabriel Augizeau died at the age of 68. More recently, from November 10 to 16, 2013, at the initiative of his granddaughter, the Galerie des Riaux des Sables d'Olonne presented 64 of his paintings. His paintings are still appreciated and sought after by collectors today.
