"Lait Cane, En Laiton. Normandie Base. Au XIXe Siècle."
Body formed of two unequal hemispheres, forged and joined by a tin-brazed beaded band. Flared truncated cone-shaped cup with rolled edge. Bent side handle with chamfered square section. Flat lid with deep socket, bridge grip. Planed finish (other models have a decoration of concentric rows of matted). The milk cane is without a doubt the accessory of rural life, the most representative of Normandy. Like the varied furniture of this province, slight differences, as to the number and arrangement of the handles, the shape of the lids, the added decorations, allow informed amateurs to specify the geographical origin on the scale of the cantons, of the canes of PÉRIERS, COUTANCES, AVRANCHES, St LÔ… The cows were milked on the meadow, in a bucket. The milk drawn, filtered by a milk strainer, filled the canes; which, arranged in groups of 4 or 6 on a pack saddle carried by a donkey, joined the farm's dairy to transform it into butter or cheese. Thus the cane was mainly used as a transport container and not for storage (see photo no. 2). Height at the lid: 34 cm. Diameter: 32 cm. Light and normal wear from use under the foot. Period: 19th century. Very good condition. Free shipping by COLISSIMO for mainland France.
