"Leopold Pradere : “the Bay Of Guethary”"
Léopold Pradère (1869-1941) "La Baie de Guéthary" watercolor 24 X 33 cm, circa 1920, unframed. Titled Baie de Guétary (BP) (sic), but annotated Baie des Basques (Vue d'Ilbaritz) on the back. Under a turbulent sky such as the Basque Country sometimes experiences, a plunging view of the cove of the Bay lets you glimpse the Trois-Couronnes drowned in fog in the background. If painting was not his main profession (he was a civil servant at the State Railways), he was nevertheless a diligent artist and exhibitor at Salons, including that of Paris. His style, characteristic of the time, where the touches of watercolor come to rest and blend into each other, giving a lot of delicacy. Originally from Haute-Garonne (Marignac-Laspeyre), he lived in Agen and Pau and, on the occasion of his death, a commemorative exhibition was organized for him in Parthenay where he is buried.
