Private collection. In very good condition. Dimensions: Frame: h.58 cm x l.53 cm. Panel: h.25.5 cm x l.20 cm. History: Taking up subjects dear to Pieter Brueghel the Elder (peasant life), which he treats in the style influenced by Frans Hals, and Peter-Paul Rubens by the luminous intensity and transparency of his colors, Brouwer excelled in genre scenes. He painted exclusively scenes of peasant life and taverns - peasant dances, card players, smokers, drinkers (see our painting) and fights - characterized by great liveliness of character and a remarkable sense of observation. He exercised a significant influence on many painters of his time, including David Teniers the Younger and Cornelis. Rubens highly esteemed his paintings to the point of purchasing a number of them for his art collection.
