Biography
Rajmund Teofil Hałas was born in Poland in 1925. He studied interior design at Poznan University of the Arts from 1951 to 1957. After completing his studies, he joined the furniture industry, and from 1956 to 1969 headed the Furniture Design Studio within the Union of the Furniture Industry in Poznań. At the same time, he was artistic director of Poznań’s “Sculpture and Carpentry Crafts” cooperative.
In 1960, he founded the “Koło” group with three other designers, Czeslaw Kowalski, Leonard Koutchma and Janusz Różański. This group initiated the Poznań Furniture Biennial and, in 1978, led to the creation of the Organizing Committee for the first Poznań International Furniture Triennial.
In 1965, he became a professor at the Poznań Fine Arts School. He also worked at the Helsinki Institute of Industrial Arts and spent time in the UK. This trip to the West gave him the idea of founding the Industrial Design Department at the Poznań Academy of Fine Arts in 1971.
He died in 2008.
