"Artifact - Antiquity - Bottle With Globular Body In Iridescent Glass - Large Balsamaire - Empire "
Period: 3rd century AD Origin: Roman Empire Provenance: Private collection of Monsieur B. (Acquired before 1973), South of France Superb glass bottle with a globular body and truncated cone-shaped neck, typical of 3rd century Roman glassware. This type of bottle, blown in fine glass, was commonly used to contain precious liquids, such as perfumes, oils or ointments. The glass, with its delicately iridescent surface, bears witness to refined Roman craft techniques and the effect of time on the material, creating reflections in shades of blue, green and silver. Description: • Material: Blown glass, with a natural iridescence due to oxidation over time. The iridescent tones of the bottle, oscillating between blue, green and silver, add a fascinating aesthetic aspect to the object. • Shape: Bottle with a globular body and a truncated cone-shaped neck widening towards the opening. The slightly flattened base ensures good stability, typical of bottles of this period. • Condition: Well preserved despite some signs of wear, slight chips at the neck and base. The natural iridescence of the glass gives it a unique beauty, with metallic reflections characteristic of ancient glass objects. Use: Glass bottles of this type were commonly used in the Roman Empire to store precious liquids, such as perfumes or oils. Due to their careful manufacture, they were often used as ceremonial objects in the homes of Roman elites, but could also be placed in tombs as funerary offerings, symbolizing prosperity and refinement. History: Roman glassware, widely distributed from the 1st century, experienced exceptional development over the following centuries. The blown glass technique made it possible to create light and elegant shapes, such as this bottle with a globular body. Iridescent glass objects are particularly prized by collectors, as they show the interaction between ancient craftsmanship and the effects of time.
