"Artifact - Antiquity - Terracotta Statuette Of A Nude Winged Eros - Ex-voto - Magna Graecia"
Period: 3rd - 2nd century BC Origin: Magna Graecia Provenance: Private collection of Mr. B. (Acquired before 1973), South of France Charming terracotta statuette representing Eros, the god of love, in an aerial posture with traces of his wings. Probably used as an ex-voto, this statuette was dedicated to the gods in a votive context, symbolizing divine love and answered prayers. Although the statuette shows signs of restoration with one wing missing and one wing glued back on, it remains a superb testimony to ancient Greek art. Description: • Material: Terracotta with a natural patina that highlights the authenticity and antiquity of the object. • Shape: Statuette of naked Eros, holding a standing or slightly inclined position. One wing is missing, while the other has been carefully glued back on. • Decoration: The details of Eros' wings and face are still visible despite wear and repairs. The terracotta has a beautiful patina with traces of old pigments on some parts of the surface. Use: Eros statuettes were often used as ex-voto, an object offered in thanks for graces obtained or to invoke divine protection. This type of statuette could also be placed in tombs to accompany the deceased in the afterlife. Despite its repairs, this statuette retains all its historical charm and is a fine example of Greek votive art. • Condition: Good general condition despite the visible repairs: one wing has been glued back on and the other is missing. The statuette also shows natural wear on the body and sculpted details. Iconography: This winged Eros statuette, even partially damaged, illustrates the popularity of the god in ancient iconography. Eros, often represented in the form of a winged child, symbolized the whims of love and desire. Comparable to other examples preserved in large collections, this piece is typical of Hellenistic and Roman art.
