"Gothic Apothecary Mortar – Eared Mortar, Spain – Early Period – Medicine"
Late 16th century Spain Magnificent small bronze mortar (brass alloy) with a cylindrical shape, typical of the late Gothic period in Spain. This mortar, also called a "mortar with ears", is distinguished by its robust structure and its relief decorations that recall the Gothic influences still very present at this time of transition to the Renaissance. Spanish Gothic, late influenced by the Isabelline style, combines both the rigor of Gothic and the first traces of the Renaissance, thus offering pieces with harmonious proportions and elaborate decorations. This particular model, rare and sought after, is decorated with two buttresses in the shape of ears, emblematic of this type of mortar used to grind medicinal substances. Formerly used in the practices of apothecaries and alchemists, this mortar was essential for the preparation of remedies or delicate ingredients. Its beautiful period patina, with dark and aged tones, reinforces the authenticity of this object.
