"Oak Community Chest – Late 19th Century"
This solid oak community chest has a lid mounted on iron hinges and held open by a so-called knee compass. The majority of community chests that contained money, gold, jewelry, documents or any other precious object were locked using three separate locks that required the simultaneous presence of three people, each with a key. This chest offered by our gallery is no exception. It is equipped with three functional locks with wrought iron entries and three keys, all authentic. The whole rests on four straight legs. This rudimentary and very solid chest will make a perfect storage unit, it can also fulfill its primary function… the protection of valuables. ******** Period: Late 19th century Excellent condition.
