Italy, 19th century (after the Antique)
This blackened bronze sculpture, made in Italy at the end of the 19th century, after an antique bronze discovered in Pompeii and preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Naples.
This sculpture represents Silenus in a dynamic and vigorous pose. In his left hand, he holds a snake that coils around his arm as well as a large circular ring topped with three finely carved acanthus leaves, an architectural element that could suggest a functional use, such as a support for a basin or other decorative objects.
Silenus rests on a circular base decorated with stylized plant motifs.
Fine carving, particularly of the face, musculature, and beard.
