Bembe statuette. Congo. Hardwood, beautiful and old patina of use, missing forearms and feet. H: 21 cm Representing a female figure carrying a child on her back. Eyes encrusted with earthenware and anus pierced to insert a "magic" charge; beautiful ventral scarifications in relief, and fine facial scarifications. Collected in situ at the end of the 1940s by Marcel Bessy, magistrate in office in AEF and AOF between 1947 and 1958 then in New Caledonia.
