Coral, turquoise and brass
Pendant dimensions: H: 9; W: 7.5 cm
Length when worn: 32 cm
Rectangular amulet depicting one of the three main Hindu deities, Vishnu, on a background of foliate scrolls and turquoise and coral cabochon flowers. He is seated on Garuda, his vâhana, a highly stylised bird-man.
Eight drop-shaped pendants enliven the lower part of the pendant, while a frieze of turquoise beads encircles its perimeter.
Two suspension rings support a wide flat-mesh chain. The hook clasp is openwork and richly decorated with floral cabochons in coral beads, centred on a blue hard stone.
This is probably an old amulet box lid mounted as a pendant. These boxes were used as talismans.
