""venus And Love", French School, Circa 1750"
Oil on canvas (perhaps a door frame?) depicting Venus and Love in the guise of Cupid, her son. Venus, goddess of Love, seduction, and beauty, is leaning half-naked, holding Love in her right arm. In the background, two doves trying to mate, one of her attributes. Her son Eros (or Cupid), naked, his quiver at his feet, is preparing to prick the male pigeon with an arrow to help it mate. From the Renaissance onwards, the Venusian theme was a great favourite with painters and sculptors who took up several motifs taken from the legend of Aphrodite. French school from the mid-18th century. Gilded wooden frame from the 19th century.
