Louis François Lachat was a student of Léon Broquet and Émile Octave Guillonnet and exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Indépendants in 1906. Renowned for his landscapes of the surroundings of Paris and the mountains of Savoy, he was mobilized during the Great War during which he was injured. In 1919, he participated in the pro-war exhibition organized by the Society of French Artists and the National Society of Fine Arts.
In 1933, he was appointed director-curator of the Annecy Museum where he modernized and updated the museum's methods and collections. After the outbreak of World War II, he was dismissed from his duties in 1941 by the authorities of the Vichy regime for his membership in Freemasonry and he settled until his death in his family residence in Châtillon-sous-Bagneux, near Paris.
