Pierre Jean Chaffrey was born in 1929 in Birmandreïs in Algeria.
After his secondary studies, he studied Fine Arts in Algiers, then spent two years in the United States.
He then settled in Nice, then in Allauch, near Marseille. It was in this city that his first private exhibition took place. Very quickly, his works tinged with surrealism were appreciated by many amateurs and critics.
In parallel with his painting, Pierre Jean Chaffrey produced tapestry cartoons woven exclusively by the master weaver Raymond Picaud in Aubusson.
In 1966, he set up his studio in Perpignan. He stayed there for thirteen years and created the first "Galerie de l'Olympe" while in Paris, his works were exhibited at the "L'Obsidienne" gallery, avenue Matignon, and at the "Bruno Martin Caille" gallery, rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré. In 1979, he moved to Lyon to create the Academy that bears his name.
